Stourbridge were clinical in despatching a game Banbury outfit, and took a big step towards securing a play-off place in the process.

In front of a bumper Bank Holiday crowd of 670, the Glassboys started slowly but forged ahead with just 10 minutes on the clock, Leon Broadhurst meeting Sean Geddes's corner to glance a header just inside the far post.

Kayleden Brown deftly touched home a second after 39 minutes and with Hungerford Town trailing 2-0 at Chippenham Town at the break it seemed as thought Stourbridge would clinch that play-off spot with a game to spare.

Brown calmed any remaining nerves with a third shortly after the resumption as Ben Billingham put him through on goal for a low finish, and Junior Smikle notched the fourth with his first goal in a Stourbridge shirt just before the hour mark, finishing off neat work by Brown.

The fifth goal came on 64 minutes when a Smikle back-heel teed up Billingham to drive a low shot inside the keeper's near post.

The Glassboys had chances to add to the lead, notably when the returning Will Richards, on as a substitute, crashed a shot against the crossbar, but ultimately the game drifted to a conclusion.

Today's result measn that Stourbridge have scored 113 Calor League goals this season, surpassing the total of 110 scored in 1935/36 and 2005/06, and making this our second most prolific League campaign. Our highest scoring season was 1960/61 when 119 goals were scored in the Birmingham League.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, Hungerford managed to turn the game at Chippenham around to win 3-2 and keep Stourbridge's cushion in fifth place to just two points, meaning that, thanks to our superior goal difference, a draw in our final game at Hitchin Town next Saturday will be sufficient to clinch that play-off spot.

Cambridge City and St Albans City both won and remain 3rd and 4th in the table respectively, although Stourbridge could catch either or both of them if results go in our favour next Saturday. Cambridge's win has, however, guaranteed them a play-off place.

However, our win today means that Poole Town can no longer reach the play-offs, despite beating bottom-of-the-table Bashley 5-0 at Tatnam.

In the clash of the top two, Hemel Hempstead Town emerged triumphant 2-1 over Chesham United at Vauxhall Road, watched by a season's best crowd for the Division of 1,943. After the game Hemel were presented with the Southern League Championship Shield.
