MFYL LCF - Stourbridge 5 Stourport 0  E-mail

For the second season running, David King's STOURBRIDGE FC YOUTH TEAM have completed a hat-trick of trophies.

Following on from their success in securing the MFYL Premier Division South title last month and last Thursday's 7 - 2 victory over Bewdley Town in the Worcestershire County Youth Cup Final, the Glassboys took on MFYL Southern Division title winners STOURPORT SWIFTS in the MFYL League Cup Final at Solihull Moors on Tuesday night and were expecting a tough match against a side who had only lost once in their division and had beaten the likes of Nuneaton Town and Chasetown to reach this final, however the Glassboys youngsters were determined to round off another outstanding campaign on a high note and they did not disappoint with a stunning 5 - 0 win.

Stourbridge had much the better of the first period to lead 2 - 0 at the break. Ryan Moore turned home a right-wing cross on 8 minutes to open the scoring and Stefan Ashman doubled the lead in the 17th minute with a drive from the edge of the box. The Glassboys had two further efforts ruled out for offside, while Will Worthington curled a free-kick against the crossbar to underline their superiority at that stage.

Three minutes into the second half, Declan Kirby slotted home for the 3rd goal after the Stourport keeper had saved at the feet of Craig Tibbetts, leading to the young custodian picking up an injury and being replaced soon afterwards by their sub keeper. Swifts hit a post in the 65th minute from their best chance of the match, but it was Stourbridge who struck again on 76 minutes when an inswinging right-wing corner from Worthington was palmed up by the replacement Swifts stopper and Craig Tibbetts rose highest to head home. The icing on the cake came in stoppage time as Worthington made it five with a fine solo goal, skipping past a couple of challenges before sliding the ball home from a tight angle.

Afterwards Stourbridge were presented with both the MFYL League Cup trophy that they last won in 2004/05 and their divisional cup to bring down the curtain on another record breaking season that also included a memorable run in the F A Youth Cup before Christmas.

WELL DONE EVERYBODY!

Youth Team Clinch Title After 10-Goal thriller!  E-mail

Congratulations to everybody connected to our youth team set-up for winning the MFYL Premier Division South in their first season, having been MFYL Southern Division champions in 2009/10.

This time it did not come down to a last game shoot-out, but nevertheless the title was secured in amazing fashion on Monday night with Stourbridge and Stratford Town - the only team that could overhaul the Glassboys - playing out a remarkable 5 - 5 draw to earn Dave King's side the point they needed.

Stourbridge started very poorly and were soon two-down. Myles Nettleford pulled a goal back, but Stratford restored their two-goal cushion before Craig Tibbetts scored to make it 2 - 3 at the interval.

In the second-half two more goals from Tibbetts enabled him to complete his hat-trick and more importantly put the Glassboys ahead for the first time on the night. Stratford were not finished though and they hit back to make it 4 - 4. Tibbetts grabbed his 4th goal of the night to put the home side back in-front with around 5 minutes left, however Stratford were rewarded for their outstanding contribution to a thrilling match with a late equaliser to make the final score 5 - 5.

A real roller-coaster of a match, but Stourbridge secured the point needed to be crowned champions in their final home game of the campaign with visits to Redditch United and Coventry Sphinx to come.

WYC Final - Stourbridge 7 Bewdley Town 2  E-mail

The Glassboys youngsters retained the Worcestershire Youth Cup with a comprehensive 7 - 2 win over Bewdley Town at Stourport Swifts. Dave King's side were five-up with just quarter of an hour gone as they dominated the early exchanges and capitalised on some shaky defending from their opponents. Jayke Downing put Stourbridge in-front with just 11 seconds gone and Alex Welch added a second after 3 minutes having seized on a defensive mix-up. Sam Pritchard and Craig Tibbetts scored with headers after 5 and 11 minutes respectively before Ryan Moore scored from close range to make it five on 15 minutes. Moore grabbed his second goal of the evening seven minutes before the break to put Stourbridge 6 - 0 up at the interval.

Although the outcome was no longer in doubt, Bewdley plugged away after the re-start to pull a goal back with a good header in the 64th minute. Stefan Ashman scored the Glassboys 7th goal ten minutes from time, but Bewdley added a second goal a minute from time from a free-kick to round off the scoring.

Well done to Dave, Gary and all the players on their fine win. Thank you to the good number of supporters who travelled to support them at Stourport.

FAYC - Grimsby Town 3 Stourbridge 0  E-mail

The Glassboys youngsters saw their gallant run in the F A Youth Cup come to an end at Blundell Park against a very capable Grimsby youth outfit. Dave King's side showed plenty of endeavour and stuck to their task well, but the home side proved to be the stronger, sharper side with their strike pairing of Sam Mulready and Dayle Southwell a constant threat. Stourbridge were grateful to stand-in keeper Dominic Richards who pulled off a string of fine saves to prevent the hosts winning by a wider margin.

Grimsby were soon on the attack from kick-off and in the 3rd minute a low drive from Southwell saw Richards dive down to his right to save. Two minutes later a Stefan Ashman free-kick for Stourbridge was headed on by Jayke Downing and Craig Tibbetts stretched to shoot against the post, however the flag had already gone up for offside. In the 6th minute Richards did well to push away a header from Grimsby's Andi Thanoj following a corner with the ball susequently scrambled away and then at the other end a header from Downing drifted wide. Grimsby soon began to take charge though with some neat passing and movement to force Stourbridge increasingly back on to the defensive and with 13 minutes gone Grimsby grabbed a deserved lead as Thanoj spread the ball out to the left for Josh Freeman to whip in a good cross for Southwell to head home. Soon afterwards Southwell created room, but struck his shot narrowly wide and then from a Robbie O'Loughlin right-wing corner, Jack Bradbury got in a near post header that drew a reaction save from Richards. On 28 minutes Southwell flashed a shot over the bar and then a quick free-kick played down the middle sent Mulready clear of the visitors defence, however his shot was blocked by the legs of Richards. In the 31st minute though Grimsby made it two when following a scramble in the box, the ball broke to Mulready to lash home. An angled low shot from Southwell ran narrowly wide and Grimsby also hit the post as the Glassboys tried to weather the pressure and five minutes before the break the ball was slipped through to Southwell on the left-hand side of the area, but he was denied by another Richards block.

Early in the second period Mulready went close with a rasping shot that flew wide before Myles Nettleford was introduced as a 58th minute substitute by the visitors. Four minutes later Richards got his body safely behind a low shot from just outside the box from O'Loughlin and then on 69 minutes the ball ran through for Thanoj who slid his low shot wide. Grimsby made sure of victory soon afterwards however as Liam Dickens slipped the ball into the path of Southwell who gave Richards no chance with a measured low finish from the right-hand side of the area, but Stourbridge refused to cave in and they searched for a consolation goal and they went desperately close on 80 minutes when Nettleford was found with a through ball and cracked a shot against the post. Richards then thwarted Mulready with a good block at the other end, but in the dying moments a snap-shot from Tibbetts was saved by home stopper Rob Peet and then Nettleford again went agonisingly close to a goal when he headed inches over from an Ashman corner.
