We welcome our near neighbours Lye Town to the War Memorial Ground on Tuesday night for the first time since 1987. Kick-off is at 7.30 pm.
Lye have enjoyed great success over the past few seasons, culminating in their promotion to the Midland League Premier Division as Champions of the West Midlands League in 2013/14., just twelve months after missing out by the narrowest of margins in 2012/13.
Last season Lye more than consolidated their new status and for much of the campaign were in with an outside chance of challenging for the title. However, a late downturn in results saw them slip to 6th in the final table. Nevertheless they can be extremely pleased with their progress.
We can expect to see a few former Glassboys in the visitors line-up on Tuesday, including Sam Rock, Damian Whitcombe, Scott Gennard, James Spray and Sam Beasley, who was a member of our youth team between 2006 and 2008. Lye are also managed by former Stourbridge Assistant Manager, and briefly Caretaker Manager in 1999/2000, Martin Thomas, alongside his Assistant Darren Goodall, another Amblecote old boy. We look forward to welcoming them all back to the War Memorial Ground.
The last meeting between the teams at Stourbridge was in the 1987/88 Birmingham Senior Cup, when, after a 1-1 draw at Stourbridge Road, we ran out 4-0 replay winners in front of a crowd of 450, with goals from Stan Jones (3) and Garry Stevens.
A couple of seasons later we did battle again at Lye in the 1989/90 FA Cup First Qualifying Round, with Lye, who had already despatched Hednesford Town in the Preliminary Round, pulling off another "giant-killing" with a 2-0 triumph en route to the Third Qualifying Round.
It is anticipated that Ben Billingham will play some part on Tuesday night against his former club as he continues his comeback from last October's terrible ankle injury. Ben has commenced a spell "on loan" at Cradley Town, for whom he successfully came through 45 minutes in a friendly match against Stourport Swifts last Tuesday.
