Two goals in the last fifteen minutes saw the Glassboys slip to a 2 - 1 loss in their opening friendly at AFC Wulfrunians.

The countdown to the new season began in earnest with a trip to MFL Premier Division side AFC Wulfrunians.

The Castlecroft pitch was in good nick considering the recent prolonged hot and dry conditions thanks to the sprinkler system at their disposal.

Summer signings Jordaan Brown, Rob Thompson-Brown and Greg Mills started the game for Stourbridge. Also featuring from the start was former Coalville Town keeper Matt Coton who played the opening half before being replaced by ex-Tamworth and Newcastle Town stopper Rajaan Gill for the second period.

Former Wolves U23 left-back Adam Osbourne and a powerfully built un-named French speaking trialist wearing '6' also began the game, with the latter playing the full 90 minutes in the centre of midfield.

With 7 minutes played Kaiman Anderson sent over a cross from the right with Luke Benbow directing a near post header off-target. The home side responded two minutes later with a low pull-back from the right enabling Mitch McDonald to get a shot away that Coton parried and on 12 minutes they should have taken the lead when with the Stour defence at sixes and sevens, Jake Webb was able to put Steve Weaver in on goal. As the ball sat up, he elected to try and lob Coton, however his effort cleared the crossbar.

Three minutes later Stourbridge forged in-front with a fine strike from Rob Thompson-Brown. The French speaking no. 6 trialist fed the ball into our summer signing from Stafford Rangers and his 25-yard shot flew past Mason Springthorpe and in off the post.

Anderson then had a low angled shot from the right-hand side of the area blocked by the keeper before Stourbridge ended the half well without extending their advantage. In the 38th minute a left-wing corner from Thompson-Brown was not collected by Springthorpe, but Benbow lifted the loose ball over. Six minutes later Mills provided a deep cross from the left that Birch turned back across goal where Benbow hooked an overhead effort wide. In first-half stoppage time Benbow played a ball through into the run of Anderson into the left channel area. He squared a pass inside into an unmarked Brad Birch, however he struck his shot too close to the keeper, who was able to make a save.

For the second period, as well as the change in goal, Jack Duggan and Stuart Pierpoint were introduced, along with Jake Evans.

Little of note occurred for much of the first part of second-half with neither keeper seriously tested. Bradley Reid replaced Benbow and another trialist replaced McCone after 58 minutes and there were two further changes with twenty minutes remaining.

Perhaps helped by already having a match under their belts, it was the home side that finished the stronger. In the 75th minute Gill had to be alert as Jumaane Meggoe chased a ball played through the right channel area with the keeper advancing to the edge of his box to block and divert the ball for a corner, but soon afterwards AFC Wulfrunians were on level terms as McDonald swung in a cross from the right and Jordan Broome got ahead of his marker to turn the ball on the volley beyond the reach of Gill. With ten minutes remaining it got even better for the hosts as Meggoe played in the pacey attacker Michael Nelson who was upended inside the box by Pierpoint. Nelson got back to his feet to successfully convert the spot-kick.

Stourbridge sought a quick reply. In the 83rd minute a right-wing flag-kick from Thompson-Brown was headed on by our 6 wearing trialist into the path of Pierpoint who struck his shot over. Four minutes later Reid glanced a header past the far post from a cross in from the right. At the other end a low centre from Nelson was poked goal-wards by Meggoe, with Gill saving with his legs. In the last action of the match, a free-kick from Thompson-Brown was headed wide by our number 6.

Our thanks go to AFC Wulfrunians for hosting us and we wish them well in their MFL Premier Division campaign.
