The Glassboys dropped to eighth in the Evo-Stik Premier following defeat at high-flying Shaw Lane.

Luke Benbow scored his fourth goal since returning to Stour on loan but his second half strike was merely a consolation.

There was a scrappy start to the game and the only incident of note in the first ten minutes was one involving Shaw Lane’s Ryan Qualter.

He appeared to raise his hand to Stour striker Kyle Perry but the defender only received a yellow card.

Benbow then looked to latch onto to an Aris Christophorou through ball but the forward was well tackled as he looked to advance on goal.

The hosts took the lead in the 20th minute. Skipper Paul McCone tripped Chib Chilaka on the edge of the penalty area and Harris sent Matt Gould the wrong way from the spot.

Harris grab his and the Ducks’ second minutes later, firing in a brilliant 25-yard effort that gave Gould absolutely no chance.

Stour were finding it difficult against a well-drilled Shaw Lane side and Alex Byrne went close to making it three just before the break as he shot narrowly over the bar.

There was a lengthy delay early in the second half after one of the referee’s assistants went down injured.

Luke Shearer had a shot saved but Stour were caught napping just after the restart when Chilaka headed home from a Byrne cross.

Benbow gave Stour a lifeline with 28 minutes to go. Darryl Westlake’s cross from the right was headed out to Benbow and his low drive from 25 yards went through a crowd of players and beat keeper Jon Stewart.

Chilaka almost scored again minutes later when his shot on the turn crashed back off the underside of the bar.

Stour huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a second goal that would have made for an interesting last quarter of an hour.

The closest the Glassboys came was through a Tom Tonks long throw with ten minutes left but Perry headed it over the bar.

Stour are back in Cup action next Saturday when we travel to Bradford Park Avenue in the FA Trophy Third Round Qualifying.
