Matt Gould was the penalty hero for the Glassboys as his two shootout saves saw Stour beat local rivals Halesowen.

The keeper, making his 100th Glassboys appearance, denied Lee Chilton and then, crucially, Enock Luc-Ekongo as Stour won 5-4 on penalties in the Birmingham Senior Cup First Round.

The visitors, who won 2-1 at the War Memorial Ground in the Evo-Stik Premier two weeks ago, were the better side in the first period.

Chilton had a wayward effort early on as the Glassboys struggled to keep possession.

John McAtee went close for Halesowen with a 25-yard free-kick before the Yeltz hit the woodwork in the 33rd minute through Chilton’s vicious effort that crashed back off the underside of the bar.

Stour improved in the second half after a scrappy start and had two great chances to take the lead around the hour mark.

First skipper Paul McCone headed narrowly over from a deep Drew Canavan corner and then former Yeltz forward Luke Shearer had his headed effort well saved by Daniel Platt.

The Glassboys kept the pressure on but Halesowen defended well until youngster Alex Cameron netted a fantastic goal on his first team debut.

The Youth Team and Academy standout was introduced in the 70th minute by Gary Hackett and he fired in from the edge of the area in the 85th minute after good work by substitute Ryan Rowe.

The Yeltz, however, equalised with two minutes to go, McAtee heading in Jordan Goddard’s corner.

The tie went straight to penalties, taken at the Church End of the ground, with the Glassboys going first.

Rowe scored the opener but Josh Green saw his effort saved by Platt before Matthew Barnes-Homer dragged wide to leave it at 1-1 after two penalties each.

McCone smashed in for Stour and McAtee did the same for Halesowen but Danny O'Callaghan then saw his spot-kick hit the bar.

Gould came to the rescue and saved Chilton's effort before Stuart Pierpoint and Marcus Poscha both netted to make it 3-3.

Kennedy Digie's penalty was saved giving Halesowen keeper Platt the chance to win it but the stopper blasted his chance well over the bar.

Shearer and Bradley Lewis made it 4-4 before substitute Aris Christophorou piled the pressure on the Yeltz by making it 5-4.

And Gould was the hero as he saved brilliantly from Luc-Ekongo to bring his Stour century up in style and send Stour through to the Second Round.

Stourbridge (4-4-2): Gould; Digie, Pierpoint, McCone, J Green; Dodd (Rowe 11), O’Callaghan, Canavan (Christophorou 65), D Green; Cooke (Cameron 70), Shearer. Subs not used: Duggan, Solomon.

Attendance: 855
