The Glassboys kicked off 2018 in some style by recording a resounding 5-0 victory over RUSHALL OLYMPIC at Amblecote.

Kaiman Anderson, Leon Broadhurst, Tom Tonks, Matt Dodd and Luke Shearer all got on the scoresheet as Gary Hackett’s men made it back-to-back wins following the 4-0 victory at Marine on Saturday.

There was a minute’s applause held before the game in memory of our former goalkeeper Derek Dudley who sadly passed away yesterday.

Stour had the better of the early exchanges and went close to opening the scoring on a quarter of an hour after a Tonks long throw caused chaos in the Rushall box.

Hackett’s side did go ahead, however, in the 28th minute. Anderson stole in, rounded keeper Charlie Bannister and fired into the empty net for his first Glassboys goal.

Luke Benbow was brought down in the penalty area ten minutes later by Aaron Brown and Broadhurst stepped up, smashing the spot kick down the middle.

Stour didn’t let their control of the game slip in the second half and Tonks made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute, putting a fabulous free-kick from the right over surprised keeper Bannister and in off the post.

Daniel Waldron hit the bar for Rushall shortly after but Matt Gould didn’t have too much to do in the Stour goal.

Dodd grabbed himself a goal in the 78th minute as his cross somehow flew into the net and substitute Shearer got the fifth three minutes later.

He latched onto a Benbow flick, used his pace to beat the last defender and blasted home into the top-right corner.

Youngster Jake Evans came on for his debut with eight minutes left and he almost set up a goal in stoppage time, putting through Benbow but the striker’s pass towards Shearer didn’t quite make it.

The result marked a fantastic start to 2018 for the Glassboys and we look to make it three wins on the bounce when we welcome Mickleover Sports to Amblecote on Saturday.
