Kieran Bustin's youth team side have made a positive start to the new season, picking up a win and a draw away from home so far.

They enjoyed a fine 4 – 1 victory away to newly promoted Hereford FC in their opening MFYL Premier Division South contest.

The match was staged at Hereford Lads Club, under their new floodlights and it took the visitors only six minutes to take the lead with Jake Brigdale finding the bottom corner of the net with a low shot from around 25 yards out. Stourbridge then doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Powell in the Hereford goal spilled a hanging cross that had come in from the right under pressure and Ewan Hunter turned home the loose ball, with the goal standing despite home protests that their custodian had been impeded.

It took just three minutes of the second period for Stourbridge to notch a third goal with Alex Cameron firing home a first-time effort that beat the home keeper at his near post and on 53 minutes Ewan Hunter grabbed his second goal of the evening, meeting a right-wing cross with a near post header beyond the keeper. The Glassboys might have added to their tally, twice hitting the ‘woodwork’ either side of what proved to be no more than a consolation strike for the hosts in the 73rd minute when a free-kick by George Hayes on the left was deflected past the helpless Stour keeper inside his near post.

This was followed up with a goal-less draw away at Alvechurch on Wednesday evening in a good contest against seemingly strong opposition.

There were five changes from the Hereford match due to injuries and holidays.

Stourbridge started slowly and nearly conceded early following a slip by Whitehouse, but then then settled down and honours were even with Stour, arguably, having the better chances. Brigdale hit the bar from a free-kick and had 2 attempts at goal thwarted, but thanks to some good saves by the Alvechurch keeper, the scores were level at half time.

The second half was much more competitive with tackles flying in from both sides. Again it was very even, but Brigdale and Cameron were both denied by the keeper. Alvechurch had the best chance of the half though when a square ball across goal was miscued wide in-front of an open goal.

Overall a fair result and one which Stour would have taken at kick-off with the numerous changes made and some key players missing.

Stourbridge Youth Team play their home league match on Wednesday, 6th September against current league champions Rugby Town Juniors (7.45 pm).
