ALVECHURCH 2 STOURBRIDGE 1

Stourbridge suffered their first loss in pre-season as ex-Glassboy Tom Turton successfully converted two first-half penalties for the hosts, either side of a leveller from Jordan Murphy.

The visitors went in with a three-man back-line of Jack Duggan, Aris Christophorou and Jacob Wedderburn with Josh Green and Bobby Moseley utilised as wing-backs. Leon Broadhurst and Drew Canavan returned in midfield, with Connor Gater pushed further forward and Brandon Hague and Jordan Murphy leading the attack.

Stourbridge played up the Lye Meadow slope in a lively first-half where neither defence appeared at ease. In the 5th minute Moseley fed Hague on the right-hand side of the box, but his low angled shot was saved comfortably by ex-Stour custodian Paul Evans. Six minutes later Gary Hackett's men fell behind. The first cross from the right by Jamie Ashmore was blocked by Duggan, however Ashmore's second attempt at swinging over the ball was handled inside the area by Duggan to earn the home side a spot-kick and Turton sent Gould the wrong way.

The Glassboys hit back with a good spell of pressure shortly afterwards. In the 17th minute a right-wing corner by Gater deflected off a head in the middle, but Murphy pulled away to send the ball back in and Broadhurst saw his header on target well blocked by a recovering defender in-front of Evans. Three minutes later Murphy linked up with Gater down the left with Gater squaring a centre low across the face of the goal towards the arriving Josh Green, but he was denied by a fine save by Evans. From the resulting corner, Duggan glanced a header against Evans right-hand upright before Murphy's shot was parried by Evans and a shot by Green was blocked.

Alvechurch replied on the break with March finding Dubidat in the left channel area, who curled his shot beyond the far post. At the other end Green again went close to getting on the scoresheet on 27 minutes when a corner from Gater was headed out in his direction. Green took the ball down well and cracked in a shot that cannoned down off the underside of the crossbar before being cleared.

The home side remained a threat going forwards, however, and twice in quick succession, Matt Gould was called upon to make smart saves. In the 33rd minute March and Dubidat combined to release Withington clear through the middle, but Gould spread himself to make a blocking save with Duggan heading away the loose ball. Moments later, in similar circumstances, Gould again came to the rescue to block from Dubidat after the home striker fastened on to a through pass from Zac Foster.

Stourbridge responded on 36 minutes to get back on level terms. Green lofted a high ball in from the right and a weak header from Parsons under pressure from Broadhurst allowed Murphy to crack home a left-foot shot from around 12 yards out.

Just three minutes later though Ian Long's side were back in-front after a clumsy tackle by Broadhurst sent March tumbling in the area and Turton again made no mistake from the penalty spot to put the hosts 2 - 1 up and Deards almost made it three on 42 minutes as March slipped a short pass into the ex- Walsall and Redditch man and his shot on the turn was saved by Gould at his near post.

The visitors introduced McCone in place of Wedderburn for the start of the second period and initially they held sway with two fine pieces of defending by Ashley Carter keeping the 'Church lead in-tact. The first came in the 51st minute after Green had worked a one-two with Gater to advance into the box, but his shot was blocked well by Carter and then three minutes later a deep left-wing cross led to Green cushioning a header down to Canavan on the edge of the box, however Carter again threw his body in the way to charge down the shot.

Alvechurch replied with Dubidat directing a free near post header off-target from a Deards cross and then Dubidat had another shooting chance, but Gould parried his effort in-front of his face.

Stourbridge made four more changes after 59 minutes with Pierpoint, Cooke, Forde and Westlake replacing Duggan, Hague, Gater and Canavan, but from that point the game rather fizzled out as a spectacle.

Reiss Jeavons replaced Gould on 68 minutes as the last substitution and he was called into action four minutes later when a pass was slipped through for Deards on the right-hand side of the box and from his close range attempt, Jeavons got a touch on the ball with his leg before it rolled against the post and out for a corner.

Moments later Murphy curled a shot wide from 20 yards before Stourbridge were left to play the last fifteen minutes with ten men after sub Forde was ordered off the pitch for dissent towards the referee.

Late on Moseley pulled a pass back for Broadhurst to send a left-foot shot over the bar and soon afterwards the final whistle blew to bring proceedings to an end.
