MATCH REPORT
Biggleswade Town 1 Stourbridge 2
The Glassboys battled back after trailing at half-time to snatch victory at the death away at Biggleswade.
Boss Gary Hackett chose to freshen the team up after Saturday’s 1 – 1 draw at home to Tamworth with Kaiman Anderson, Chekaine Steele and Brad Birch handed starts and Luke Benbow, Robert Thompson-Brown and Callum Powell dropping down to the bench. There was then a further enforced change before the game got underway when Jordaan Brown picked up an injury in the warm-up and Stuart Pierpoint took his place in the side.
A tough contest was expected against the Bedfordshire hosts who had only suffered one loss in the league prior to this game, but a scrappy first period provided little entertainment for spectators with the visitors in particular struggling to string three passes together as they were harried by their energetic opponents. This led to too many aimless balls forward in the air with Kaiman Anderson having little chance to effect the game against two tall strong centre-halves and the two wide players not seeing enough of the ball in good areas.
Stourbridge were first to threaten with three minutes gone with Aaron Forde slipping a pass to Mills and he dribbled across the edge of the penalty box before hitting a low left-foot shot that lacked the power to test home keeper Sam Donkin. Biggleswade replied five minutes later with Solomon Nwabuokei taking on Aaron Hayden and then hitting a firm shot that James Wren saved.
It was the home side that forged in-front in the 18th minute. Matt Ball swung in a corner from the left into the near post area where Stuart Pierpoint inadvertently headed the ball into his own net. Buoyed by the goal, the hosts pressed again on 26 minutes with Martel Powell squaring a pass to Ball and he beat Hayden before firing in a low shot from 20 yards that Wren couldn’t hold but he gathered at the second attempt as Joe White closed in.
Stourbridge offered more in the latter stages of the first period with Darryl Westlake finding Mills on the left and he whipped in a low shot that Donkin collected and then in stoppage time a kick downfield by Wren caused some confusion in the home defence with Donkin drawn off his line, but under pressure from Anderson his partial clearance fell to Aaron Forde, but with the keeper beating a retreat, the Stour midfielder couldn’t find the target with his lofted effort on goal.

The early part of the second-half was much like the 45 minutes that had gone before, but a Stourbridge equaliser on 57 minutes sparked the game into life. Westlake fed Mills who took advantage of a slip by Ben Walster to drive down the left flank and cut inside into the box before winning a soft penalty under a challenge by David Longe-King. Mills got back to his feet and sent Donkin the wrong way to bring the scores level.
Almost immediately Callum Powell was introduced in place of Steele as the visitors made their first substitution of the night.
On the hour mark Stourbridge had a let-off with the home side having a ‘goal’ chalked off for offside. A left-wing cross from Ball saw Peter Clark stoop to head home past Wren, but the assistant’s flag came to the Glassboys rescue.
Stourbridge responded in the 66th minute with a diagonal ball from Pierpoint finding Mills over on the left. He cut in and fired in a low shot that drew a sharp save from Donkin at his near post.
The visitors made two further changes to liven up their attacking endeavours with Thompson-Brown taking over from Broadhurst in the 69th minute and Luke Benbow introduced for Benbow after 76 minutes.
The two substitutes linked up two minutes later as Westlake played a ball into the feet of Benbow and his lay-back allowed Thompson-Brown to dig out a shot from 20 yards that curled narrowly wide of Donkin’s left-hand post.
Stourbridge finished the stronger with the home side possibly feeling the effects of their Trophy tie against Gloucester on the Sunday. In the 82nd minute Thompson-Brown fired in a free-kick from just outside the box that Donkin had to push over the bar and then in the 90th minute Thompson-Brown fared even better with another free-kick, which had been awarded just outside the left-hand side of the box. A tight angle, but the Stour sub struck his effort low into the near post area and the ball flew through a crowd of bodies rushing across in-front of the keeper before nestling in the back of the net to earn the Glassboys a big three points away at another promotion hopeful.
