The Foundation, launched by Maddy’s family in honour of the former Sheffield United player who passed away last September, aims to continue her legacy by supporting other inspiring footballers and making a difference within women’s football.
Maddy previously played for Birmingham City and Aston Villa, before joining the Blades, where she made over 100 appearances, a Club record. She was a member of the Sheffield United team that played against Stourbridge at the War Memorial Ground in 2021 in the Women's FA Cup.
The coaching staff will be running, walking and cycling the equivalent of the distance from the War Memorial Ground to Kingston Park, Newcastle United Women’s home ground, the furthest distance travelled by the team this season, and are targeting a figure of £2,000 towards the foundation.
Glassgirls’ Assistant manager Tash Tezgel outlined why the venture is so important to everyone involved.
“There isn’t enough support generally for women and girls playing football,” she explained. “Whether it’s a question of money or people, women’s football is always down the pecking order, and that’s something the Maddy Cusack Foundation wants to work towards changing.
“The game is changing quickly, and the pressures on women and on younger players coming into the game increase every year. Without proper support in terms of mental health, balancing work, family life, training and playing, etc, things aren’t always easy.
“Player support has always been my passion. First and foremost, players are human beings just like everyone else, and | think that’s easily forgotten sometimes. We expect them to perform every time the whistle blows, and life just isn’t always like that.
“We wanted to do our bit to help, and this seemed like something positive that will help raise awareness as well as funds for the Foundation.”
