Nicklin's Night at Glassgirls Awards!

Nicklin's Night at Glassgirls Awards!

Richard Clark4 Jun 2022 - 09:55

Alex Nicklin was the big winner at the Glassgirls Presentation Evening on Friday, carrying off two awards.

Alex picked up the Players’ Player of the Year Award for the second consecutive season, and carried off the Supporters’ Award too, on a night when an incredible season was celebrated and relived, with awards also presented for the Development Team and Under 18s.

Joint leading scorer with 23 goals, Alex has been a constant driving force with one tireless display after another in midfield throughout a campaign which ended with a League & Cup ‘Double’ and promotion to the FA Women’s National League.

The Manager’s Player of the Year Award went to Mill Rogers after scoring 18 goals in her first season with the Glassgirls, and playing a pivotal role up front.

Meanwhile, the ‘One Heart One Way’ Award was presented to Niamh Murphy, another player new to the Club this season.

Manager Andy Fisher was delighted for all of the winners.

“Alex has been brilliant all season. I don’t think you can argue when a player is recognised by both the supporters and her peers, and to be honest there was never much doubt about either Award.

“I said when we signed her from Kidderminster two years ago that we had the best player at Tier 6 at the time, and better than anyone in Tier 5 in my opinion, and she’s proved that for me beyond doubt.

“Mill Rogers has been a game changer for us. The way she has bullied defenders all season long, even against teams from higher levels, held the ball up, created space, scored goals and made dozens more for other players, she’s been key to everything.

“And that goes for off the pitch too. If you know Mill, you know what a strong character she is, and she’s at the heart of the dressing room week-in, week-out.

“The ‘One Heart One Way’ Award is a very special one at this Club. There’s no outright definition of what it signifies, but it’s something that embodies what the Club is about. For any player to win it less than twelve months after joining us says a lot about them as a person, and I don’t think anybody would argue that Niamh isn’t worthy of it.

“She’s maybe had her ups and downs on the playing side, but towards the end of the season in particular she made it impossible for me to leave her out. She’s quiet until she comes out of her shell, but in her own way she’s become one of the leaders in this squad, and someone that everybody looks up to.”

Development Team Awards went to Tara Salt, Chelsea Hassell and Meg Bailey after a season which saw the team finish third in a competitive Birmingham County League ( a Division the First Team was playing in only six years ago) and reach the League’s Open Cup Final.

Tara collected the Manager’s Award after scoring 33 goals in 19 matches, finishing as the League’s leading scorer. Chelsea was chosen by her fellow players having produced a string of excellent defensive performances before finding a goal-scoring knack later in the season, whilst Meg – like Niamh, in her first season with Stourbridge – received the Devs’ ‘One Heart One Way’ Award for her all-round contribution.

The Under 18 Awards were presented to Dani Parkes (Manager’s Player of the Year), Eleanor Stark (Players’ Player) and Isla McNally (One Heart One Way).

All three players were praised by manager Daz Barnes for their contributions, with Eleanor and Isla also having successfully made the step up into the Development Team towards the latter stages of the season.
