Club stalwart and record appearance holder LEON BROADHURST is leaving the club to join newly promoted BROMSGROVE SPORTING. (READ ON)

Leon called Glassboys chairman Andy Pountney earlier today to confirm that he had decided to accept an offer from Bromsgrove Sporting.

Andy commented: "Leon has been in touch with me today and confirmed that he is going to join Bromsgrove Sporting. At this stage in his football career he sees it as a fresh challenge and an opportunity to carry on playing regularly and Leon is exciting by the prospect of performing for his home-town club as they break new ground and take their first steps at this level.

"He goes with our sincere best wishes and gratitude - not only for his efforts and achievements on the pitch, but for being a genuine and well-respected and liked person around the club who has always conducted himself well.

"Leon will be coming along to our pre-season friendly at home to Kidderminster Harriers next month to say farewell to the fans and hopefully we'll get him to do a lap of honour at half-time.

"We also wish his wife Emma, his young family, and his mum and dad all the best too. They've become such familiar faces around the club over the years.

"Good luck Leon!"

Leon, now 35, was still in his teens when he first arrived at the War Memorial Athletic Ground in the summer of 2003. He was one of Gary and Jon's first signings after they took charge that summer, having previously featured for Fairfield Villa and the now defunct Bromsgrove Rovers.

His first official appearance came on a baking hot afternoon at Stratford Town in the Joe McGorian Cup (MFA League winners v League Cup winners), which we lost 1 - 0 and his first league start came a week later with a 2 - 1 win away to Grosvenor Park.

Now 16 years on, he has 780 appearances (738 + 42 sub) to his name and 154 goals, including the famous extra-time winner away at Leamington in the play-off final in 2008 that brought us back to step 3 of the non-league pyramid.

He also got to play alongside his two brothers Ryan and Nathan during his time at the War Memorial Athletic Ground.

He had two brief stints away from the Glassboys. He returned to Bromsgrove Rovers for a short-time towards the end of the 2004-05 campaign before heading back for the start of the following season and he also moved to Leamington at the beginning of the 2009/10 campaign, but was back in our colours by October for a third stint and he has remained with the Glassboys since.

A tireless player who enjoyed a well-deserved testimonial in April 2014, he spent most of his time with us playing in the centre of midfield but has also appeared at left-back or centre-half.

The evergreen campaigner swept the boards at the end of season awards for the 2017/18 season and he contributed 9 goals in 49 appearances (37 + 12 sub) last season as he remained a key figure in our push for the play-offs. He fittingly scored against Hitchin on his 750th appearance back in November.

A 'legend' for ever!
