Stourbridge 2 St Ives Town 0

Steven Coney17 Sep 2017 - 15:53

The Glassboys are through to the FA Cup third qualifying round after a dominant display against St Ives Town at the War Memorial Ground.

Leon Broadhurst was the hero for Stourbridge as the midfielder’s two second half goals saw off St Ives Town.

The Glassboys, who made history by getting to the third round last season, dominated most of the game against their Southern Premier opponents but had to wait until the second period to get their rewards.

Gary Hackett’s side looked good early on and Josh Cooke, who was rewarded with a start after scoring the winner against Barwell last Monday, saw his effort cleared off the line after a Tom Tonks corner caused all sorts of problems.

The visitors from Cambridgeshire could well have been ahead after 13 minutes but Phil Draycott shot wide at the back post after a good ball across the box by Lewis Hilliard.

Tonks was on hand to clear substitute Dubi Ogbonna’s header off the line and Matt Dodd then fired over after Aaron Forde played him through.

Left-back Darryl Westlake almost put the Glassboys ahead just before the interval but his 30-yarder flew narrowly wide.

It was a frustrating first half for the home side with Hackett’s men unable to turn their territorial dominance into goals.

Stourbridge were causing all sorts of problems from set pieces and defender Jack Duggan flicked just wide from a ball in seven minutes after the restart.

Broadhurst was handed the captain’s armband after defender Stuart Pierpoint was replaced following a clash with Ogbonna and it took the new skipper just a minute to make a big impact.

Tonks drifted in from the left-hand side, curled a great ball into the box and Broadhurst was there to head past James Goff in the 59th minute.

Goff kept his side in it with a great save to deny substitute Danny O’Callaghan, who slotted in at centre-back to replace Pierpoint, from a corner but it was another set piece that brought Stourbridge their second.

Tonks’ deep free-kick was headed back across goal by the brilliant Duggan and Broadhurst was in the right place to apply the finishing touch in the 69th minute.

Sub Ryan Rowe had a great chance saved by Goff late on after a mix-up in the St Ives defence but it mattered little as Stour safely made it through.

The Glassboys will find out who they will be playing in the third round qualifying round on Monday with the draw set to be made at lunchtime.

Stourbridge (4-4-2): Gould; Christophorou, Pierpoint (O’Callaghan 58), Duggan, Westlake; Dodd, Forde, Broadhurst, Tonks; Archer (Rowe 78), Cooke (Hague 62). Subs not used: Green, Kiembi, Jeavons.

Attendance: 765
