A very competitive and tight game against a strong Brackley outfit saw the Glassboys slip to a narrow 2-1 defeat.

The Saints, as the only pre-season opposition from a higher level in the pyramid than the Glassboys, and playing their final pre-season game ahead of the National League season's opening day next Saturday, were expected to provide a stern examination of Gary Hackett's team's credentials for the months ahead, and they did not disappoint in that respect.

With several players unavailable for various reasons, Gary Hackett was forced to shuffle his pack somewhat, and there was a return to Stourbridge colours for Josh Morgan-Parker, who heads off to University in Manchester in September. There were also places on the bench for trialists Luke Williams and Pierce Kiempa.

The game got off to an explosive start as the teams traded a goal apiece in the opening four minutes.

Virtually straight from the kick-off, Brackley went on the attack and Lewis Solly was beaten within 30 seconds as Sam Smith managed to get the final touch to a loose ball in the six-yard box to stab home.

Stourbridge hit back, though, and it was Lee Chilton who drove at the home defence before firing low beyond Dan Crane into the bottom far corner with less than four minutes played.

The goal that eventually settled the game came on 25 minutes, as Luke Graham rose highest at the far post to meet a left-wing cross, and he managed to direct his downward header into the bottom corner past a stranded Solly.

Despite the defeat, Hackett will have taken a lot from the game with the new Evo-Stik season just two weeks away, as his side more than held their own throughout.

STOURBRIDGE LINE-UP: Solly (Price HT), Green, Scarr (Pierpoint 40), Connolly, Tonks, Harris (Kiempa 70), Morgan-Parker (McPike 60), Broadhurst (Tye 60), Smikle (Williams 70), Chilton, Hayward.

UNUSED SUBSTITUTES : None.
