Match Report | Harborough Town 4-2 Stourbridge FC

Bek Howell15 Sep 2024 - 15:35

A depleted Glassboys side excited the FA Cup at the hands of a spirited, physical Harborough Town side.

With several players out injured including Harvey Portman and Alex Jones alongside Jordaan Brown and Alex Bradley missing due to illness, we were forced into several personnel changes alongside a change of shape.

The bench was bolstered by the return of Ollie Taylor and Alex Moore who are returning to full fitness whilst we made three changes to the starting line up with Aaron Forde, Callum Coyle and Toumani Sidibe coming into the side.

We started the game brightly with Coyle creating space for himself before firing just over the target before Harborough delivered a freekick deep into the area where Warmington was on hand to collect.

It would be Riley O’Sulivan who opened the scoring just five minutes in when we were caught in possession deep inside our own half which saw Kennedy cross into the box where O’Sulivan was waiting to head home.

Both sides were continuing to ask questions in the opening stages with Elliott Durrell finding Jourdain Masidi outside who combined well with Forde before crossing into the box but the keeper collected.

More pressure from Harborough followed as we failed to deal with a long goal kick before the following shot hit the side netting before they were gifted a dangerous freekick which struck the wall.

It wouldn’t take them long to capitalise on the pressure when Kennedy was on hand to turn home a low, drive cross into the box which we failed to deal with.

Durrell was involved again as he picked out Freemantle but two strong challenges prevented him advancing goalwards and Harborough would break quickly, forcing Tyrese Warmington into a good block.

They would come close again with a strike hitting the bar before ETHAN FREEMANTLE gave us a lifeline as he did well to hold off his defender and create enough space to fire a shot off which went in at the far post!

Harborough would reinstate their two goal lead just six minutes later when the referee overturned an offside decision and allowed their goal to stand after Williams turned home from just a yard or two out following a deep ball into the box.

Half time: Harborough FC 3-1 Stourbridge FC

It would be a slow start to the half from the Glassboys with Will Grewal-Pollard being booked after just three minutes and from the freekick that followed, the hosts would add their fourth. The freekick was delivered deep into the box and was cleared as far as Rose on the edge of the box who’s volley was struck beautifully past Warmington.

We had a chance to reduce the deficit as Sidibe did well to keep a ball in out wide before finding Freemantle inside the area who set it back to Miro Pais but he could only strike the ball well over.

Grewal-Pollard then saw red after a second bookable offence inside the opening 15 minutes of the half which saw us go down to 10 men with just over 30 minutes left to play.

Our first change of the afternoon followed with Dom Lewis replacing Callum Coyle.

The team dug deep despite being a man down with Pais making a good recovery run to block a powerful Harborough strike before Sidibe broke through the Harborough defence before his shot was deflected just wide.

Our second and final change came with 20 minutes left on the clock as Jai Verma replaced Elliott Durrell.

We continued to push for a way back into the game as Freemantle found himself with the ball in a crowded box although he couldn’t quite get a shot away before Pais was fouled just outside the area. Forde delivered the freekick but Bavanganga could only head just over the bar.

As we entered added time, Fremantle would net his second of the afternoon as he was in the right place inside the area to turn home a dangerous cross.

His brace would be nothing but a consolation as the referee brought an end to proceedings soon after and we exited the Emirates FA Cup in the second qualifying round.

The team now have a week without a midweek fixture as we look to rest and recover with some of the missing players aiming to return ahead of next week's trip to Bishop's Stortford.
