Club officials attended a ceremony in Mary Stevens Park on Saturday morning to honour Corporal Harry Whitwell.

Corporal Whitwell, of the 9th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, died aged 24 while fighting for his country in Mesopotamia on February 2 1917 and was buried in Amara War Cemetery in modern day Iraq.

His 26-year-old brother Thomas, of the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, was killed in action in France a few months later on May 21 1917, leaving a wife Frances and daughter Mabel.

But news of Harry's death was delayed and the widowed father of the ill-fated brothers, Henry Whitwell, died in 1920 before names were gathered for the Stourbridge memorial.

Thomas's widow Frances is presumed to have put her late husband's name forward and made a donation towards the cost.

But for reasons unknown - Harry's name was omitted.

A number of civic dignitaries were also present at the service, which was organised by the Worcestershire-based Remember the Fallen group and Dudley Council following a campaign by Corporal Whitwell's great nephew Paul Nash.

Around £3,000 was raised to help pay for Corproral Whitwell's name to be added to the town's War Memorial, including funds raised by supporters of Stourbridge FC amongst many others. As a Club we are proud to support this campaign and thank all of our supporters for their donations.

Stourbridge FC Chairman, Andy Pountney and President, Hugh Clark represented the Club at the ceremony, and the following letter was subsequently received from Sandra Taylor on behalf of Remember the Fallen.

Dear Andy

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your President Hugh Clark for attending the dedication service for the addition of Corporal Harry Whitwell's name to the Stourbridge War Memorial in Mary Stevens Park, Stourbridge on Saturday 13th September 2014. The addition of Harry's name to the memorial and the service would not have been possible without the support of yourself and Stourbridge Football Club, where we raised a significant amount of funding earlier this year towards the final total required. It was a pleasure to meet you both as well as all those we met at the Football Club.

Once again my sincere thanks.

Very best wishes

Sandra
