Stourbridge FC reached the 2nd Round Proper of the F A Cup for the second time in three seasons as they overcame a nervous start to run out deserved

...winners at the end of a thoroughly entertaining cup-tie that was played in a good spirit despite the stakes being high.

The Bedfordshire visitors, at this stage of the competition for the first time in their history, settled quickest and the hosts survived some anxious moments as the Waders applied some strong early pressure. In the 9th minute Craig Daniel exchanged passes with Lee Reed before hitting a fierce shot from the edge of the box that forced Dean Coleman into a tip-over save. Three minutes later though the Glassboys opened the scoring against the run of play with Drew Canavan supplying a cross from the right towards the near post area and Ryan Rowe stole in ahead of visiting keeper Ian Brown to bundle home a close range header. Home joy proved short-lived, however, as Biggleswade restored parity within a couple of minutes. Lee Allinson delivered a high free-kick into the Stour box from close to the half-way line away to the left and Evan Key got up to send a looping header from around 12 yards out beyond Coleman and into the top corner of the net. Stourbridge hit back quickly though to regain the lead in the 17th minute as Callum Lewis lost possession to Luke Benbow around 25 yards out before Canavan threaded a pass through to Rowe on the right-hand side of the area and he made no mistake with his finish as he tucked the ball low past Brown. The home side began to take control after that although their next chance didn’t arise until the 33rd minute when a delightful diagonal ball from Sean Geddes was taken down well by Benbow, wrong-footing his marker in the process, before he fizzed a shot inches over the crossbar. Eight minutes later a ball forward from Leon Broadhurst allowed Benbow to get in behind Max York on the left and he sent in an early low cross with the outside of his boot that just evaded Rowe in the middle. In the 44th minute a clearing header by Gray fell to Canavan twenty yards out and he struck a volley that Brown collected on his line. In first-half stoppage time Biggleswade were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, however Mark Coulson’s curling effort was safely held by Coleman.

Four minutes after the break the visitors had a good chance to get back on level terms when a deep cross from the right by Allinson was met by Gray at the far post, but he was unable to direct his header on-target. Stourbridge responded four minutes later with Geddes playing a through ball for Benbow to chase and it took an excellently timed tackle by Steve Gentle inside the penalty area to halt the Glassboys striker, then in the 58th minute Will Richards fed Jamie Oliver and his pass forward ran through to Benbow on the left-hand side of the area who elected to shoot, but saw his effort blocked by Brown at the expense of a corner, although squaring the ball across to Rowe might have been the better option. However from the resulting left-wing free-kick taken by Geddes, Will Richards drove in at the near post to guide a header into the top corner of the net to give the Glassboys a two-goal cushion. Gary Hackett's men threatened again five minutes later with a Geddes free-kick enabling Nathan Bennett to get in a stooping header that was too close to Brown and then on 67 minutes Geddes squared a pass to Jordan Fitzpatrick and he slid Benbow away through the left channel area, only to clip his shot over the bar. As Stourbridge continued to force the pace, Fitzpatrick slipped a pass into the run of Geddes and he cut back from the left-hand by-line to work a shooting position before driving in an angled shot that was blocked by Brown. Having failed to put the tie to bed completely, the hosts ran the danger of letting Biggleswade get back into the match to set up a tense finish and on 77 minutes Daniel flashed a 20-yard shot past Coleman’s right-hand upright and then six minutes later Coleman was called into action when a free-kick from the left by Coulson was headed on and dropped invitingly towards York around six yards out at the far post, but Coleman made a crucial close range save. However three minutes from time Benbow made sure of victory. A goal-kick from Brown was met by Richards who headed the ball powerfully forward and another glancing header from Rowe allowed Benbow to use his pace to get away from Gentle and this time he got his reward for his hard running all afternoon as he slipped a left-foot shot low past Brown to set the seal on another great day in the history of the club.
