A solitary strike 12 minutes from time by Gavin Skelton gave Workington all three points, but was harsh reward for a good Stourbridge performance.

After an even, and entertaining, first half Stourbridge went on to control the second period for long spells, with the visitors often struggling to get out of their own half, but when the dust has settled Gary Hackett will reflect that his team paid the price for not turning their possession and chances into goals.

There were two changes to the starting eleven from the previous match at Blyth two weeks ago. Will Richards and Leon Miles returned in the centre of defence, with Kayelden Brown and Tyrone Williams making way.

Workington began on the front foot and pushed the Glassboys back in the opening minutes, but it was Chris Lait who had the first sniff of goal on 5 minutes, his looping header from Matt Dodd's cross dropping just over the bar.

Gareth Arnison similarly headed over for the visitors from Jake Simpson's free kick moments later, before two successive corners caused panic in the home defence. Dean Coleman spilled the first, with Will Richards shovelling the loose ball behind, and then the second flew across the face of goal with nobody from either side attacking it.

Drew Canavan put Matt Dodd in for a run on goal after 19 minutes, but Kyle May got back to get enough on Dodd's shot to make the save easy for Jonny Jamieson, and then with 24 minutes played there was a further scare in the Stourbridge defence as Richards got in the way of an attempted clearance by Leon Broadhurst which rebounded back towards goal. Coleman leapt to his right to save but as Arnison looked certain to steer the loose ball in, Chris Knight managed to block his effort for another corner.

To this point, the visitors had looked the more likely of the two sides to penetrate the opposing defence, and the Glassboys had looked uncomfortable at times as Workington came forward, but gradually it was Stourbridge who began to press more as the half neared its conclusion.

A break by Stourbridge on 27 minutes saw Drew Canavan feed Luke Benbow out wide on the left. He took on a defender and crossed for Dodd whose effort was diverted for a corner at the near post by Jamieson.

Leon Miles came close three minutes later. Staying up from the back after a corner, he met Luke Connolly's far post cross with a firm header that Jamieson somehow managed to claw away.

Further chances fell to Chris Lait on 37 minutes, as he curled his effort wide of the far post, and then to Benbow two minutes later, spooning his shot over the bar after good work from Dodd down the right. The final action of an end-to-end half saw Miles head well wide from a corner.

Workington again pressed early in the second half but didn't trouble Coleman. Instead, it was the Glassboys who should really have opened the scoring on 53 minutes as Benbow, unmarked, attacked Canavan's cross from the left, but tamely headed straight at Jamieson when either side would surely have led to a goal.

Benbow again came close on the hour, turning and shooting just wide after holding off his defender, as the Glassboys gradually took control of the game.

Canavan fired a free kick over the bar on 65 minutes, after earning the free kick himself, and then substitute Kayelden Brown raced through with 77 minutes played, touching the ball past Jamieson only to see May clear under pressure from the other Stourbridge substitute, Josh Morgan-Parker.

Within a minute, however, the game turned. Lait was dispossessed after dallying on the ball just outside the visitors' penalty area, and Workington broke quickly. When the ball was half-cleared it dropped to player-manager Skelton, whose first effort was blocked. His second was more successful, though, flying beyond Coleman into the far corner to break the deadlock.

From there on the Glassboys were limited to half-chances and snatched efforts. Connolly fired over from 20 yards on 84 minutes, and then Knight shot wide from a similar distance on 88 minutes, before Richards saw his powerful header from Canavan's 90th minute corner well held under the bar by Jamieson.

The result leaves Stourbridge in 13th place in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division table going into Easter Monday's Black Country Derby at Halesowen Town.
