STOURBRIDGE 4 BEDWORTH UNITED 1

It had been wet and dreary for much of the day, however the playing surface held up well and once the home team got their noses in-front there was little doubt about the final outcome against a visiting side still searching for a first league win since winning promotion in May.

Perhaps with one eye on Saturday’s cup tie at Guiseley in mind Stourbridge showed five changes from Saturday’s narrow victory over Royston with Darryl Westlake ruled out through injury and Luke Benbow, Paul McCone, Callum Powell and Aaron Forde on the bench. Aris Christophorou and Stuart Pierpoint came into the back four with Brad Birch in the centre of the midfield, Kaiman Anderson leading the attack through the middle and Chekaine Steele operating on the right of the front three.

The Warwickshire visitors had their best spell of the contest right at the start with a couple of opportunities falling their way in the opening three minutes. In the 2nd minute Kai Tonge provided a low cross for Alex Troke who saw his shot blocked by James Wren with the ball then cleared away for a corner after some momentary hesitation in the Stour defence. The resulting right-wing flag-kick from Daniel Dubidat was met by Tonge who sent his header wide.

The hosts settled down after a shaky start though and began to assert themselves on the game. In the 9th minute a through pass from Rob Thompson-Brown deflected off a defender into the path of Anderson and he hit a low shot from the left-hand side of the box that Adam Harrison in the Bedworth goal managed to block at his near post.

Bradley Maslen-Jones picked up an early caution for the Greenbacks and he was soon joined in the book by Delroy Gordon who received a yellow card on 15 minutes for a foul on Steele as he threatened to get away in the clear. The resulting free-kick from 25 yards out by Thompson-Brown had to be tipped over the crossbar by Harrison. More home pressure saw a corner only half cleared before Steele retrieved the ball and cut inside from the left and hit a low shot that Harrison was equal to and then moments later Steele sent over a cross from the right and Harrison was again called into action to tip a header from Pierpoint over the bar.

Gary Hackett’s men continued to enjoy the greater possession and they threatened again on 24 minutes. A free-kick was quickly taken to Jordaan Brown on the left and his ball in found Anderson who saw his shot on the turn deflected wide for a corner.

Barry Fitzharris became the next Bedworth player in go in the book on 31 minutes for a tug before Stourbridge pushed again as Thompson-Brown delivered in a free-kick from the right and a header from Aaron Hayden drifted past Harrison’s right-hand post.

Stourbridge endeavours eventually paid off as they broke the deadlock from the penalty spot with 36 minutes played following a rush of blood from the Bedworth keeper. Pierpoint played a pass forward into space looking for the run of Steele and the visiting keeper was drawn off his line and succeeded only in clipping and upending Steele on the right-hand side of the box to concede a penalty. This time Greg Mills stepped forward to do the honours and he sent Harrison the wrong way.

The second period proved to be largely one way traffic on the Bedworth goal as Gary Hackett’s men moved the ball around well to work opportunities despite the visitors sitting back in numbers.

Steele grabbed his first goal for the club in the 56th minute when a Thompson-Brown free-kick in from the left was half cleared towards the edge of the area but Steele drove home a shot through a crowd of players to double the lead.

Mills went close on 59 minutes with a curling shot from just outside the left-hand corner of the box that flew past the far post.

Bedworth then won a free-kick in a good position in the 62nd minute, however Wren got behind the effort on goal by Troke and patted the ball down before gathering it in his hands.

Stourbridge grabbed their third goal of the night with twenty minutes remaining. Birch fed Mills and he struck a shot that Harrison could only parry and Broadhurst was tugged back as he tried to reach the rebound to earn his side a second penalty. Mills again calmly despatched his spot-kick away to virtually put the result beyond doubt.

Mills tested Harrison on 80 minutes as he cracked in a low shot that the keeper parried round before Paul McCone entered the fray in place of Brown with eight minutes to go.

In the 89th minute Steele got on the score-sheet again as he rounded off a move that saw Pierpoint intercept a pass before playing the ball out wide to Mills on the left. His deep cross was met by Steele who headed home from almost on the goal-line at the far post.

The copy-book was blotted in stoppage time though when Bedworth grabbed a consolation goal with sub Iyseden Christie heading home inside the six-yard box from a right-wing cross from Ryan Baldwin but the points had long since been secured with Stourbridge going second with this result.
