A brace of goals apiece for Aaron Forde and Paul McCone helped the Glassboys maintain their strong home league record and complete a double over their North Worcestershire opponents.

Stourbridge produced a good response to the disappointment of losing their Birmingham Senior Cup semi-final to Nuneaton the previous midweek with a busy and more up tempo showing against the Reds and despite the continuing absence of Luke Benbow through injury, they also found some end-product to ensure their endeavours were rewarded.

Although a strong, gusty wind blowing in a south-westerly direction down the ground was a factor with rain also arriving before half-time, it turned out to be an entertaining contest with play opening up considerably after the interval.

James Wren returned in goal for the hosts with Stuart Pierpoint also coming in at centre-half and Aaron Hayden switching to right-back in place of Aris Christophorou as a result. The visitors were without the services of four of their regular starters through injury or suspension with Richard Batchelor, James Bowen, Mike McGrath and Rob Evans all having to sit this match out.

Redditch played the opening half with the wind in their favour. They were first to threaten after four minutes when Paul McCone conceded a free-kick for a foul on Harry Franklin, but Wren got safely behind Josh Hawker’s 30-yard left-foot effort on goal.

Better play from the hosts on 9 minutes saw Callum Powell produce a jinking run down the right before sending in a low cross that found Aaron Forde and he hit a low first-time effort from 16 yards that Adam Whitehouse didn’t collect cleanly, but the Reds keeper mopped the ball up at the second attempt.

Forde was prominent again in the 16th minute as he worked room for a shot on the left-hand side of the box, but his strike on goal was saved by Whitehouse at his near post.

Three goals in seven minutes really saw the contest come to life. With 20 minutes gone Stourbridge forged in-front. Jordaan Brown took a throw-in on the left and found Greg Mills close to the by-line. The Glassboys wide-man delivered in a telling deep cross that was headed home at the far post by the arriving Forde.

Home joy proved short-lived though as Redditch restored parity three minutes later. McCone lost possession to Jack Storer who took on and beat Aaron Hayden before sending over a cross from the left that seemed to hold up on the wind and it caused some indecision in the middle with both Pierpoint and Wren hesitating before visiting striker Danico Johnson tried to bring the ball down under control. It was Robbie Bunn who then reacted quickest to the situation, seeing off Brad Birch before tucking away the equalising goal past Wren.

Stourbridge recovered quickly though to re-take the lead minutes later. Forde delivered in a corner from the right for Hayden to get in a header that Whitehouse could only parry. Kaiman Anderson followed up and had two bites of the cherry to try and score, but Whitehouse blocked his first close range effort and his second attempt was kept out by the grounded Lewis Wright, however Paul McCone was on-hand to finally turn the ball over the line to make it 2 – 1.

Redditch tried to hit back and two free-kicks in from Bunn had Stourbridge on the stretch. In the 33rd minute his ball in from the right-hand channel just evaded Jordan Stoddart in the middle and five minutes later his low free-kick from a similar area was this time taken into his stride by Johnson, who turned and hit a low shot that Wren saved before Pierpoint completed the clearance at the expense of a corner that came to nothing.

Stourbridge were back on the attack on 41 minutes as a loose clearance by the visitors close to the corner flag led to Forde getting on the ball on the right. He laid a short pass inside to Anderson and he turned and clipped the ball up and across to Birch who brought it down under control but sent his shot off-target.

A minute before the break the home side had a let-off as a quick counter saw Johnson release Leachman-Whittingham away down the right and his driven low cross was met by Storer but he shot over, although the assistant’s flag spared his blushes.

The second period saw Stourbridge make better use of playing into the teeth of the wind, but their third goal on 54 minutes had an element of good fortune about it. Andy Parsons was cautioned for a tug-back on Anderson and the resulting free-kick into the area by Mills unhinged the Redditch defence. An attempted clearance from Wright hit Hayden and the ball looped up and across in the direction of McCone and he had the simple task of nodding the ball home.

Redditch sought an immediate reply with Bunn looking to send Leachman-Whittingham away down the right. A slip by Jordaan Brown allowed the Redditch attacker to cut into the side of the box, however his low cross-shot was well cut out by Wren.

Stourbridge responded with Mills feeding Anderson who curled a shot over from 20 yards, but on the hour mark Forde put the hosts firmly in the driving seat with the goal of the game. Mills slipped the ball into his feet about 25 yards out and he curled a shot beyond the reach of Whitehouse for a sublime finish.

Mills nearly made it five in the 63rd minute after Forsyth and Anderson had combined well with Mills pushing his low shot from just outside the box past Whitehouse’s right-hand post and two minutes later Hayden directed a header straight into the arms of the Redditch keeper from Forde’s deep right-wing flag-kick.

Leon Broadhurst replaced Birch with sixteen minutes remaining and then four minutes later Anderson sent Mills away down the left. After cutting inside, his low cross was partially cut out by Parsons, but Mills regained possession and he drilled in a low angled shot that drew a blocking save from Whitehouse.

In the 80th minute Wren was called into action to make a parried save away to his right to keep out an angled shot from Franklin and then Stourbridge made two changes in quick succession as Thompson-Brown replaced Forsyth and Christophorou took over from Brown.

Three minutes from time Mills provided a cross from the left that was pushed away by Whitehouse towards Powell, however he miscued his shot on the turn off-target, but the Glassboys could feel pleased with their afternoon’s work after a convincing team display.
