The Glassboys are into the Third Round of the Emirates FA Cup, thanks to Jack Duggan's goal four minutes from time!

Whilst it was Duggan who wrote his name in the history books, there were heroes in red and white stripes all over the pitch as Stourbridge took the game to their Sky Bet League One opponents and were the better team for long periods.

The breakthrough finally came when Luke Benbow's free kick from 35 yards out was missed by Cobblers' keeper David Cornell and the ball found it's way through to Duggan at the far post, where he gleefully thundered it home in front of an ecstatic Shed End.

Stourbridge had to hold out for four more minutes, plus another three of added time, but the Cobblers did not look like finding an equaliser, and when the whistle blew there were joyous scenes of celebration all around the War Memorial Ground.

The Glassboys now take their place on the most famous stage of the domestic football season, and will travel to Wycombe Wanderers full of confidence that they can go even further.

On a mild evening that bore no resemblance to the frosty conditions which pit paid to the first attempt at playing the tie, Glassboys manager Gary Hackett had the luxury of a fully fit squad to choose from, and named an unchanged starting eleven with the exception of the Cup-tied Jordan Archer, who made way for Kayelden Brown.

In front of a 2,520-strong War Memorial crowd, Stour showed no signs of early nerves and were first to threaten as Matt Dodd won a corner on 3 minutes which was cleared easily, before a rare error from Tom Tonks at the other end allowed Sam Hoskins a brief glimpse of goal before being crowded out.

Tonks and David Buchanan could both easily have found their way into referee Andy Davies's notebook for strong challenges as the game ebbed and flowed in the early stages, but it was Stour who had the first clear sight of goal with ten minutes played as Chris Lait and Benbow exchanged passes allowing the former to get in a shot that went narrowly wide of Cornell's left-hand post. Dodd's cross then found Benbow, but he was dispossessed before he could shoot in what was to become a familiar story - Glassboys attackers getting into good positions but being thwarted by solid blocks and tackles.

Benbow tried his luck from a free kick 25 yards out on 15 minutes but was some way wide of target, and then there was something of a let-off for Duggan three minutes later as a ball into the box bounced up and appeared to strike him on the arm. There was no movement of the arm towards the ball and it seemed accidental, but it could still be considered a stroke of mild fortune for the home side.

Northampton looked to increase the tempo and impose themselves on the game as the half neared its midway point, and there was another scare in the Glassboys' penalty area as Matt Gould and Dan Scarr jumped for the same ball, and were relieved to see it fall safely for Dodd to smuggle clear.

Lewin Nyatanga headed over from Matt Taylor's corner on 26 minutes, before Stourbridge enjoyed a good spell of their own, testing the visitors' defence from set pieces in particular. First Kristian Green swung a deep cross into the heart of the Cobblers' area for Scarr to head goalwards, forcing a fingertip save from Cornell, and then from the successive corners that followed Duggan saw his far-post header blocked and then glanced another header wide of the far post.

Lait and Dodd were continuing to cause problems with their direct running and pace, and from a free kick earned by Dodd, another header from Duggan was held low down by Cornell, whilst at the other end Aaron Phillips's untracked run ended with a shot well over from just outside the area.

There was still time before the break for Brown to be denied at close range, and then for Paul Anderson to fizz Northampton's closest effort yet just past Gould's right-hand upright. The Glassboys could be happy with their first half performance, and with the scoreline. As against Whitehawk in the previous round the tie was most definitely still within grasp.

Clearly relishing a potential repeat of the second half of that First Round replay, Stour resumed on the front foot. Three minutes into the half, Benbow set up Tonks for a shot that was blocked, as the Glassboys sought a breakthrough.

It almost came in bizarre fashion on 55 minutes as a long throw from Tonks bounced up and onto the crossbar, possibly via the fingertips of Cornell. Had the ball gone in the goal would only have stood had another player got a touch, of course, and as it was the rebound flew just out of reach of Dodd as he closed in on the line.

Two minutes later a strong run from Lait was stopped well on the edge of the area, and then Scarr again tested Cornell's reflexes as he tipped over once more from the centre-back's header from a Tonks cross.

As long as Stourbridge could not capitalise on having the upper hand, though, the chance of Northampton delivering a knock-out blow was always present, and there was concern when Darryl Westlake fouled Hoskins 25 yards out, only for Taylor to strike his free kick straight into the defensive wall.

Jak McCourt had no more success from a similar position on 67 minutes, clearing the wall this time, but also clearing Gould's crossbar by some margin, and then with Northampton again showing signs of assuming control, a tremendous challenge by Scarr robbed Marc Richards as he looked set to shoot from ten yards.

Stourbridge were visibly showing signs of the effort put in up to this point, and the Cobblers were increasingly pushing on. Loose clearances seemed to fall ever more to yellow-shirted players and the Glassboys were relying on quick breaks that were almost all cut off before any threat on goal could materialise.

Hoskins saw an effort from outside the area deflected over on 77 minutes, and from the corner Alex Revell saw another shot diverted over before Hoskins again fired over, this time without any deflection.

In response, Hackett introduced Connor Gater, with the on-loan midfielder able to put a foot on the ball and retain possession, thereby allowing Benbow, Brown and Dodd more chance to test the visitors' defence.

And it was a run from Dodd that was to make the difference, as he went down under a challenge from Buchanan that brought a caution. From the free kick, Benbow swung the ball into the danger area, where Cornell came without conviction, the ball sliding off his glove to the waiting Duggan at the back post, and the Stour man delivered a thumping finish.

There were moments of concern in the closing stages. Gould dropped a cross under pressure, with Green on hand to clear, whilst Phillips shot over in added time, but the Glassboys were not to be denied probably the finest victory in 140 long years.
