The Glassboys came back from a goal down to record a 2 - 1 victory at Walshes Meadow on Saturday. (READ ON)

Stourbridge claimed their first win of the pre-season build-up with substitutes Rob Thompson-Brown and Paul McCone netting for the visitors after Andy Nicol had been Stourport ahead against the run of play.

There was a new face in goal with 19-year old keeper Niall Maher arriving on trial having been released by Morecambe at the end of last season, while three of last season's squad - Darryl Westlake, Aaron Forde and Leon Broadhurst - got their first minutes under their belt after missing the games at AFC Wulfrunians and Lye Town.

Following a quiet start to proceedings, Stourbridge gradually began to impose themselves on the home side. In the 17th minute Brad Birch fastened on to a Luke Benbow lay-off to advance down the right before finding Jake Evans who was thwarted by a splendid tackle by Rudy Misambo. A minute later a right-wing cross from Benbow on the right just evaded Kaiman Anderson at the far post. Soon afterwards Birch picked up an injury and was replaced by Thompson-Brown and then on 28 minutes Forde played a ball into the run of Westlake down the right flank and his cross was met by Broadhurst, however his header was comfortably saved by former Stourbridge youth team keeper Dominic Richards.

It was, therefore, out of the blue when Stourport opened the scoring in the 29th minute. Drew Canavan fed Joe Billingham and his through pass played in Andy Nicol on the right-hand edge of the box as the visitors appealed in vain for offside. Nicol took the ball on before firing an angled low shot across Maher and into the far corner of the net.

Stourbridge looked for a quick response with Broadhurst hitting a low shot from 25 yards that was turned aside by Richards as he dived down low to his left and then Richards was equal to a left-foot shot from Anderson.

The Glassboys got back on level terms on 38 minutes when Jake Evans retrieved the ball in the left-hand corner and fed it back to Aris Christophorou. He squared the ball inside to Thompson-Brown and the summer signing notched his second goal in pre-season with a curling low shot from around 25 yards out that beat the diving Richards.

Kaiman Anderson might have made it two in the 41st minute. A mix-up in the Stourport defence saw the ball ricochet into the path of the striker on the edge of the box, but he curled his low effort inches past Richards' left-hand upright.

On the stroke of half-time the Glassboys were awarded a free-kick just outside the left-hand side of the penalty area and Benbow opted to take it on and cracked an effort goal-wards that Richards parried away.

The Glassboys made their second and third changes at the interval with McCone and Bradley Reid replacing Westlake and Benbow.

Stourport changed things around a little and made a stronger start to the second period, although the Glassboys almost forged in-front in somewhat unorthodox fashion on 48 minutes. Thompson-Brown provided a cross from the right and Evans, on the stretch, rather acrobatically hooked a looping ball towards goal and as it dipped, the keeper could take no chances and pushed it away for a corner.

Stourport replied with Maher making a brave save, diving down at the feet of Canavan and then in the 55th minute a ball in from the right was collected by Dane Aldington, who pushed his shot the wrong side of the post.

A further wave of changes saw the game settle down for a time. Louis Hall and James Timmins replaced Broadhurst and Forde respectively and then after 73 minutes Raajan Gill took over from Maher in goal and Greg Mills replaced Anderson.

On 78 minutes Mills checked inside from the left and drove in a rising shot that was touched away for a corner. The resulting right-wing flag-kick from Thompson-Brown was met by McCone at the near post, but his header rebounded off the post, however the danger wasn't over. The ball was sent back into the six-yard box where Pierpoint and Reid challenged with two home players and McCone was then able to turn the ball over the line from close range.

Two minutes from time Reid hit a 20-yard shot that was stopped and then gathered up by the keeper at the second attempt in the final attack of note.
