Stourbridge v Coventry Sphinx
By JOHN DANKS
Coventry proving just too strong on the day...
A rather damp morning meet both teams on Saturday for this MJPL fixture where Stourbridge welcomed Coventry Sphinx. The game started very evenly with both teams having pockets of possession but neither fashioning any clear cut chances. Stourbridge were awarded a free kick which was defended well by Coventry but with some excellent wing play, Jacob produced a superb cross, but both attackers were only inches from opening the scoring. During a period of possession Coventry took the lead when persistent pressing from their forward led to a shot being deflected past the Stourbridge keeper. For the remainder of the half both teams pressed and only some last ditch defending stopped the equaliser coming in the last moments of the half.
The second half started with Coventry pressing and the second goal came quickly when a nice passing movement produced a chance which the striker took very well passing the ball past the advancing keeper. Stourbridge changed their team and pressed but were always open to the counter attack. A fine move down the left between Olise and Callum produced a fine save at the near post from the Coventry keeper. Stourbridge tried in earnest to breakdown the Coventry defence but they were repelled by some solid and physical defending. The game petered out giving Coventry a 2-0 win.
Stourbridge FC management would like to wish Coventry all the best for the remainder of the season.
