Stourbridge Ladies continued their build-up to the new season with a 4-1 win at home to Wem Town on Sunday.

Goals from Millie Rogers (pictured), Esme Moran and Alex Nicklin established an early 3-0 lead before Wem hit back shortly before the break, and a late own goal completed the scoring.

Manger Andy Fisher was pleased with the result, after the previous week’s narrow defeat at Solihull, but felt there was still plenty to work on.

“It’s good to get another win over another tier 4 outfit, of course. We started well, and we deserved those three goals, but we got a little bit sloppy at times and it’s just a warning that we can’t think in terms of rolling teams over every week.

“We’re playing these higher level teams for a reason, to toughen us up for the challenges ahead, and in that sense it was a very worthwhile exercise again.

“The things we did well, we did very well. There were other things we didn’t do so well, so we’ve got stuff to work on ahead of next week’s game.”

Stour took the lead on 7 minutes when Gee Thacker was set free down the right wing and her first-time cross was met by the head of MILLIE ROGERS for her first goal in a Stourbridge shirt. Within four minutes the lead was doubled as ESME MORAN picked herself up from a trip to bury the resulting penalty just as emphatically as she had done the previous week, and by the 20-minute mark the Glassgirls were three goals to the good as Carly Aldred’s corner wasn’t dealt with and ALEX NICKLIN nipped in to turn the loose ball home.

Wem reduced the deficit five minutes from half time with a quick break down the right, before the winger cut in and arrowed a shot into the far top corner.

Despite both teams fashioning chances in an end-to-end second half, a fourth goal for Stour didn’t come until ten minutes from time. Again Thacker’s pace caused problems down the right and her low ball in forced a defender to touch past her own keeper.

Stourbridge Ladies are in action again this Sunday when they visit Sporting Khalsa, another tier 4 side, at Noose Lane, better known to most as the former home of Willenhall Town FC (2 pm kick-off).
